HOW DOES HYPNOSIS WORK?

Hypnotherapy is assistance provided an individual in obtaining various levels of self-hypnosis.  Please see note about (Guided Imagery) at the end of this page.

Hypnosis can benefit any area of your life imaginable.

1.  A hypnotized person does not go to sleep or lose touch with reality in  most areas of treatment. The patron is aware of everything going on around them.      Most people don’t recognize the state of hypnosis, expecting to become unconscious.

Unless they are the one in ten who easily achieves the deep somnambulistic, level of hypnosis, this is not at all what the experience is like.  They remain completely aware of everything around them.  This does not mean that they were not hypnotized.  It simply means they are experiencing a hypnotic level between light and medium states, which is most effective for purposes of behavior and habit control.

2.  Hypnotic suggestions directly proposed cannot make a person do anything contrary to their morals, religion, or self-preservation. If a suggestion were given against ethical values, the patron would either refuse to comply or would spontaneously terminate the hypnotic state.

3.  The best hypnotic participants are not unintelligent people. The more strong-willed, intelligent and imaginative an individual is the easier the patron tends to enter hypnotic states.

4.  Anyone can be hypnotized.  Hypnosis is a natural occurring phenomenon which we all experience, there is no such thing as not being able to be hypnotized.  Once an individual overcomes their initial apprehension through understanding the truth about hypnosis, it is an easy experience.

5.   Hypnosis Requires consent trust and cooperation.  It cannot force you to do anything. A hypnotist only assists your own power, never overrules it.  Hypnosis empowers you to do what you have already decided that you want to do, be what you want to be.  Hypnosis is the tool that allows you to create your own reality.  You can learn to move from being a victim to victor of your circumstances, and create your own luck.

The hypnotic state is an optimum state for making changes in your life.  During hypnosis you can set aside limiting beliefs that may have been preventing you from moving toward a more healthy and happier you.  In order for you to understand how hypnosis works, it is very important for you to understand the relationship between your conscious mind and your subconscious mind.

The conscious mind, which accounts for 10% of our mind, is working right now as you are reading this.  It is that part of you that is aware of what is going on right now.  Choices and decisions are made by the conscious mind.  The conscious mind analyzes makes decisions, exercises what we call Will Power.  The conscious mind also is the place of working memory.  It is the memory we use every day to function.

The Subconscious mind, accounts for 90% of our mind, can be compared to a computer in that it stores the data for all the experiences we have ever had.  One of the most important functions of the subconscious mind is that it automatically controls our bodily functions; breathing, heart, tissues etc.  The subconscious mind is creative, intuitive, irrational, and emotional.  Being irrational can work for you or against you.  This is where you need to be able to tap into your subconscious mind through your conscious mind.

The subconscious mind does not know how to NOT do something.  That is a logical analytical function of our conscious mind. I can assist you in many areas. First you must want to heal or change.

Life isn't about finding yourself.
Life is about creating yourself.

Note:

The term Guided Imagery is often used interchangeably with Hypnosis. This relationship or reference is a misconception in Dr. Murphy's opinion. Guided Imagery is often used as a term to disguise the term hypnosis, since some individuals might have mixed feelings about the use of hypnosis. I want to point out that Guided Imagery is not the same as Hypnosis.  They are similar and often overlaps, hypnosis is not "just" guided imagery.

There are additional important elements to hypnosis that are not generally found in guided imagery. One can certainly engage in guided imagery during hypnosis, but not all hypnosis involves guided imagery, and guided imagery does not necessarily result in hypnosis.

More importantly, the skill for imagery is not the same as the skill for entering and using hypnosis. Clinical Hypnotherapy is superior; because it works with the subconscious mind more directly, while Guided Imagery is associated more with the conscious mind.

EXAMPLE: With guided imagery if I asked you to imagine a red apple. You would imagine that red apple. If I said change that apple from red to yellow, you would be able to do so.  With hypnosis the hypnotist could suggest that the red or yellow apple was a lemon, or that a lemon is an apple, or a lemon tastes like sugar and it would be real in the patrons mind. The difference is Guided Imagery would not change all the senses to cause one to actually beleive a lemon was sweet, or a lemon was an apple. Hypnosis can influence all five senses and create illusions and hallucinations.

Once again although Hypnosis utilizes Guided Imagery it is superior therapeuticallyI do not believe in using disguised terms to gain public acceptance; and contend it is better to inform the public of the true nature of the services I endorse.
